I'm trying to decide what is best: laser resurfacing, microdermabrasion, or chemical peels. Is laser resurfacing a good choice compared to the other options out there?
It all depends on weighing the advantages and disadvantages of each particular treatment and machine used, as well as your desired goals. This is why it's important for the doctor to choose the right equipment, as there are many nuances. We spent 3 months before choosing 11 particular lasers.

There are many options out there, but without knowing your age and skin condition (sun damaged, pigmented, rosacea etc), it is difficult to determine which is best for you. Microdermabrasion is mainly to exfoliate the skin, which improves cell turnover if done regularly. There are different chemical peels and varying depths depending upon the focus of the treatment. There are also varying laser resurfacing procedures which can be very deep requiring anesthesia or milder done under topical anesthetic. There is also dermal needling such as SkinPen II. You should seek a consultation in a cosmetic medical office that is experienced in all the available treatments to assess which would be the most appropriate for you.

Laser resurfacing is much different than microdermabrasion.
Microdermabrasion removes the upper 10 microns of the skin (1/100th of
an inch). Laser resurfacing can remove anywhere from 30 to 300 microns
(3/100ths to 3/10ths of an inch) depending on the type used, CO2,
Erbium, fractional or otherwise. Microdermabraision has no downtime and
can make your skin feel refreshed and soft. Laser resurfacing can have
anywhere from a few days to a few weeks of recovery and take years off
your appearance.
Chemical peels are unique because some act like microdermabrasion
(Jessner peels) and others act like laser resurfacing (phenol peels).
Chemical peels offer a wide variety of results depending on the
downtime. For no downtime chemical peels don't expect much.
The bottom line is that the best choice for you depends on the issue you
are trying to resolve. For very deep acne scars and deep wrinkles, CO2
or phenol peels may be your only option, whereas if you just need to get
rid of some light brown or red acne scars, microdermabrasion may work
fine.
